Our hotel is situated on part of the Westport House demesne, which gave us our beautiful mature woodland setting. It was built in 1968 by the 5th Marquis of Sligo, owner of Westport House in conjunction with Jury’s Hotels .
Five years later in 1973, it was bought by returned emigrant Michael Woods, who gave it the very appropriate name “Westport Woods”. Monaghan native Michael Woods had spent most of his life in Detroit, working his way to the top of the automobile trade. He and his family managed the Westport Woods Hotel until 1977 when he sold it to the Ryan Hotel Group.
Ryan’s introduced the concept of family and golden years holidays which are still such a big part of our culture. At that stage the hotel had just 57 bedrooms, less than half of the current tally. It changed hands again in the early 1990s when Eurohotels, a management team associated with Ryan’s took it over along with the Yeats Country Hotel in Rosses Point Sligo and Buswell’s, the well known political hotel in Dublin. In March 1995 Brian McEniff Hotels purchased both the Westport Woods and Yeats Country Hotels, and have owned and managed them since.
Brian McEniff Hotels is a family hotel group, run by Brian and Cautie McEniff from Bundoran, Co. Donegal. The group consists of the Holyrood and Great Northern in Bundoran, the Yeats Country and Sligo Southern in Sligo, the Westport Woods and the Skylon in Dublin. Best Western Plus Westport Woods Hotel is owned by Brian and Cautie along with their daughter Joanne McEniff and her husband Michael Lennon who manage the hotel.
Joanne and Michael have completely renovated and expanded the hotel in those 15 years. In 1996 they added 38 new bedrooms followed by an additional 16 in 1997. The lobby and function room were extended and refurbished in 1998 and the following year the award winning Beech Club Leisure Centre was added. The luxury Spa was built in 2004 and in 2007 the bar was developed into the contemporary Bench Cafe Bar as it is today. The last additions were the elevator and 11 new bedrooms in 2008.
Our latest development includes an adventure area here you will find a high rope tower, zip wire, archery & pellet gun course and are available for use under the supervision of a qualified instructor. This development has been a huge success and we are currently working with an adventure agent and using 15 of our rooms on a hostel style basis.
The greenest hotel in Ireland Best Western Plus Westport Woods Hotel is a flagship for environmental concern and management and we are proud to be Ireland’s greenest hotel. Over the last seven years we have implemented a complete environmental policy involving every area of the hotel’s management. We no longer use any oil, depending instead on wood pellet boilers and solar power. We have effective composting, recycling and energy management strategies which have reduced our carbon footprint by a substantial 65%. Our aim is to be carbon neutral within a few years. In 2002, we sent 240 tonnes of waste to landfill, this year it will be about 22 tonnes. It’s amazing what can be achieved when strategic changes are made.
Look around when you visit us. You’ll notice the low-energy lighting (CFL and LED bulbs), you’ll find a green bin in your bedroom too , inviting guests to help us in our greening effort. You won’t see any individually wrapped butter pats or jams – instead we use bulk packs, cutting down on unnecessary waste. Please ask us if you’re interested, we can’t wait to tell everyone about all the little changes which add up to make such a difference. We’re really proud of our green hotel status.
